Southern's Ks Class 2-8-0's were the main 2-8-0's used on the line. There are several different variants in the K class family. Each design derived from the previous. It can be hard to tell members of the family apart because the numbers aren't grouped to each individual class (as in Ks 573-640 or Ks-1 630-722). The classes are scattered between (for the most part) numbers 550~890.

K - The base design of the series. They did not have superheaters and other modern appliances. [http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/steam/cons/i/sou552.html Example]

Ks - The most numerous of the class. Most noticable by their odd shaped cylinders. [http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/steam/cons/sou734estlouisill539.html Example]

Ks-1 - The most generic looking. These were the first with piston valves. Two famous excursion engines came from this group, 630 & 722. [http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/steam/cons/ks1/sou630.html Example]

Ks-2 - To me these are virtually identical to the Ks-1's.

Ks-3 - These are the largest Southern Railway consolidations. They are numbered in the 2500's. Very easily distinguished by their size. [http://southern.railfan.net/images/archive/southern/steam/cons/sou2501knoxville.html Example]
From the tiny A-7 0-6-0's to the aesthetic Ps-4 4-6-2's to the monstrous Ls-2 2-8-8-2's, we are creating each of the major engine classes and variations of the Southern Railway's steam fleet. I would like to say that the engines will have different variations and feature based on what subsidiaries owned and equipped locomotives with. Such as pneumatic smoke hoods or Wimble Smoke Ducts on CNO&TP engines along with the CNO&TP's unique numberplates. NO&NE will not have large Mikes or much anything bigger than a Ps-2. Same for GS&F. So you will have a selection of engines, schemes, features, etc. I hope to have scripted elements such as markers, ARN, and smoke effects. I also have a goal set for animated bells, custom interiors, and many other "payware only" features. All of this freeware. This will be allow you to drive around any type of Ps-4 and will exhibit the beauty of the steam of the oldest completely dieselized Class 1 Railroad. That is what makes Southern Railway a challenge to model. It was a road of innovation, loving to welcome in new technologies. They wanted to leave the past behind and be the railroad of the future. They did just that, leaving behind only handfuls of steam era information. A lot of valuable information, thrown away years ago. So everything is hard to find.
Southern's 4-4-0 fleet were used mainly on light passenger and mixed trains on the lines around the Gulf, where light rails and poor track prohibited heavy engines from taking their jobs. These lines in particular were those of the New Orleans & Northeastern (NO&NE), Georgia Southern & Florida (GS&F) and some of the southern areas of the Alabama Great Southern (AGS).

In 1941, because of public interest in "streamliners", Southern introduced two new trains, the Southerner and the Tennessean. These trains were entirely different from all previous passenger trains hauled be the Southern. There were no Ps-4's on the point or Pullman green cars. These trains marked the end for the Ps-4's (the Pullmans lasted until the bitter end). On the point of these were one of seven EMD E6A's bought by Southern followed by a "B" and a lineup of stainless steel Budd cars.

Termini: New York, Penn Station (via Pennsylvania Railroad) - New Orleans, Canal Street Terminal Station.

* The Southerner would later be reduced to an all coach train. After 1970, the Southerner was combined with the Crescent into the Southern Crescent. The Southern Crescent ran until 1979 when Southern transferred all passenger buisness to Amtrak. Amtrak still runs the the Crescent today.
Termini: Washington D.C., Union Station - Memphis, Union Station

*The Norfolk & Western would not allow diesels on their track for the run between Lynchburg & Bristol for a long time, so the Southern was forced to turn this portion of the trip into steam. They didn't, however, want to sacrifice their precious new diesels on the short run between Washington and Lynchburg, but the engine had to match the aesthetics of the new train. So, they hired Otto Kuhler (for free) to streamline one of their Ps-4 Pacifics. The result was one of Otto Kuhler's favorite works and an engine even better looking than the SP GS-4's.
