A wiki is a website that allows its users to add to and modify its content with a normal web browser. A wiki does not require its users to have knowledge of HTML or other complex markup languages. Many pages can be edited in plain text, with just a few special tags being used for formatting, headings, and creating links.

This Trainz help all resides within an editable wiki, which any Trainz player can view, modify and contribute to. So if you encounter a help page which is blank or you think it could be improved, jump in! Simply use the "Log in" link in the top right corner to log in to the wiki using your Planet Auran account, then navigate to the desired page and click the edit link. Abuse and vandalism of the Trainz wiki will not be tolerated and may result in your Planet Auran account being banned from all online services.

For specific information about the markup language used in this wiki please see the official MediaWiki website. Note that unfortunately this website is not accessible in game, and must be viewed in a standard web browser outside of Trainz.

The Forums
If you are unable to find the help you need on the wiki head over to the forums! The Trainz community is vibrant and friendly, and we're very proud of the comaraderie among our many like-minded fans. Like the wiki you can log in to the forums using your Planet Auran account. Once logged in we recommend you search the existing threads to see if somebody else has already answered your question. If you cannot find the answers you need then simply start a new thread in the relevant forum for your Trainz version.

Not only are the forums a valuable resource for getting help, they're also a great place to meet like-minded players and train enthusiasts from all over the world. Check out the various sections of the forums for everything from help to screenshot sharing, organising multiplayer games, announcements about custom content and upcoming releases, general discussion, and more.

This page provides online help for the iTrainz Chat interface.

Click the green "Head" icon on the top menubar to open the chat window. There you will see the #trainz channel. Click on it to begin chatting via text to other Trainz users.

Chat Channels
Chat channels allow multiple users to join a conversation simultaneously. Channel names differ from user names in that all channel names start with a hash (#) symbol.

Adding a chat channel to your buddy list does not autoamtically join you to the channel - you must first click on the channel name to open the channel window. Closing the channel window or exiting Trainz will disconnect you from the chat channel. Minimizing a channel window does not disconnect you from the chat channel.

The following chat channels are maintained:

* [trainz://channel/#trainz #trainz] - The general Trainz community chat channel.

Planet Auran Users
The iTrainz Chat uses your Planet Auran account to identify you. This means that you can locate your friends using the same unique names as they use in the Auran Trainz forums.

Buddy List

=== The Help (?) Icon ===

On the top right of the menubar is the Help (?) icon. The Trainz in-game help system allows you to display help for many different aspects of the game. Not everything has help but because the help system is wiki based, it is growing all the time.

To get help for a specific game feature first click on the help icon in the top right of screen, it will appear as an arrow with a '?' icon. You are now in help mode. Once in help mode you can move your mouse over the desired feature in game and it will change to a pointing hand when help is available. As you move the mouse over an element that has a help page you will see the input box text change. You can also type directly in to the displayed input box to search for help on a specific topic.

The Web Browser (+) Icon
Trainz comes complete with an in-game browser that points directly to the wiki page. You are also able to use this browser to find out more about Content Creation, How-To Guides, or even personalized pages for individuals. Explore the wiki to see what treasures you can uncover.

Trainz Chat (Head) Icon
The iTrainz Chat icon will show green if there are other people online. It will show orange when a new chat message is received. To use chat, simply click on the green icon, then choose the #trainz channel to meet fellow Trainz fans. You can also create your own channels, invite buddies to chat and so on.
Do you want to help expand the Wiki?

The Trainz in-game help system allows you to display help for many different aspects of the game. Not everything has help but because the help system is wiki based, it is growing all the time.

To get help for a specific game feature first click on the help icon in the top right of screen, it will appear as a round button with a '?' icon on it. You are now in help mode. Once in help mode you can either type directly in to the displayed input box to search for help on a specific topic, or you can click the mouse on the desired feature in game. As you move the mouse over an element that has a help page you will see the input box text change.

What is a Wiki?

The Trainz community is vibrant and friendly, and we're very proud of it.

Click here to access the forums now

The Helpdesk
If all else fails you can contact the helpdesk to seek personal assistance directly. As Trainz is available in many countries, many languages and on many different platforms and devices it may take some time for them to respond to your query. As such we recommend you treat this as a last resort.

Mesh stitching is an TS2009 rendering optimization that is automatically applied to many types of static meshes. It allows multiple smaller objects to be uploaded to the GPU as a single object, reducing per-object overheads that would otherwise apply.

Performance
Modern GPUs have a per-material setup cost which results in a cost of roughly 300 polygons for any render chunk, regardless of whether that chunk is 1 polygon or 300. For chunks with significantly higher polygon count, this overhead is negligible, however when dealing with large numbers of small objects the overhead can quickly become far more expensive than the actual polygon rendering. Mesh stitching provides a mechanism, transparent to the content creator, of batching large numbers of small chunks into a single render call.

In order for this technique to work, the chunks must all share the same material type. This is typically true when the same asset is placed repeatedly (for example, track, or trees in a forest) but can also occur through the use of a Mesh library.

Mesh stitching causes the provided mesh(es) to be broken into their component chunks, and then each chunk is stitched against other chunks in the scene which share the same material.

Specific Level of Detail techniques apply to stitched meshes.

Suitability
TS2009 automatically determines whether a given object is a suitable candidate for Mesh stitching. There is no user mechanism for specifically enabling or disabling mesh stitching on a specific object, however there are various specific cases which are not supported by Mesh stitching and should be avoided where possible to allow maximum performance.

* Mesh stitching is only applicable to meshes in the .IM file format. Meshes in .PM or .LM format are not candidates for stitching.

* Meshes with animation skeletons are excluded from mesh stitching.

* Meshes which are attached to a mesh which is not stitched, are typically not stitched.

* Certain asset types are excluded from stitching because they are expected to move frequently. KIND Traincar and KIND Interior are examples of this (TBD: full list here.)

* Meshes which have very high polygon counts are typically excluded from mesh stitching, as the cost of stitching is roughly proportional to the number of triangles and the benefit of stitching falls as the triangle count approaches the maximum hardware buffer size.

* TBD: Other restrictions which prevent mesh stitching.

Limitations
Although for many purposes, mesh stitching is a huge win, there are a few potential downsides to the this approach.

* There is a higher cost, both in terms of actual cpu time and in terms of latency, to modifying a stitched mesh in any way. Even a simple change, for example rotation or positioning, will require the mesh to be restitched. Meshes which are modified frequently are not good candidates for mesh stitching, however it is not always possible for the game to detect that a mesh will be used in this manner. Care should be taken to avoid unnecessary modifications to meshes.

* Since mesh stitching determines whether materials are shared at load time, it is not possible to use effects which would require the material to be manipulated at runtime where mesh stitching is active. This means that certain material-manipulating effects are now considered obsolete:

:* Texture replacement must be performed via an texture-replacement effect in the mesh-table, so that the game is aware that the materials will be dynamically modified and is not suitable for mesh stitching. Texture replacement via script without using a texture-replacement effect will not function.

:* Changes to material lighting parameters from script will not function. The material should be configured correctly in Max so that the final configuration is available to the game at load time.

Metrics
The Runtime Performance Statistics display in Surveyor can be used to analyse the performance of the stitched mesh system. This is useful for testing entire scenes as well as accurately gathering data on single objects. Unlike counters in external tools, the statistics display provides a measure of how content is actually performing on your hardware.

TBD: How are attachment points affected?

* Toggle the "Display performance stats" setting as appropriate.
Statistics
In the current version of the tool, the following information is displayed:

Stitched Mesh Statistics
These statistics represent the inputs and outputs of the mesh stitching system, which prepares efficient geometry for submission to the GPU. These numbers relate to the mesh stitching resources only, and do not account for similar types of resource usage in other systems. Larger numbers typically indicate increased system load.

* total buffers - The number of hardware buffers currently in use for the stitched mesh system. There will always be a minimum of one hardware buffer allocated per material. If a material is assigned to a large number of triangles, additional hardware buffers may be allocated to share the load. In "compatibility mode", some asset types may require one buffer per request, rather than stitching multiple requests into a single buffer.
* unprocessed buffers - The number of buffers which require CPU stitching. This number should be zero when idle, and increases while objects are being loaded, unloaded, or are changing Level of Detail (LOD).
* vertices - The total number of hardware vertices present in the stitched mesh system.
* indices - The total number of hardware indices present in the stitched mesh system. This number correlates with the number of triangles being rendered (typically three indices per triangle.)
* materials - The number of distinct materials present in the stitched mesh system.
* total requests - The total number of input requests to the stitched mesh system. This is a general indicator of route density.
* unprocessed requests - The total number of input requests which require CPU stitching. This number should be zero when idle, and increases while objects are being loaded, unloaded, or are changing LOD.
* worst buffer count - The KUID and total buffer count of the single asset which is consuming the largest number of hardware buffers. This does not necessarily indicate a poor performer - it may be that the asset is simply used far more heavily than other assets in the current scene. This is, however, a great place to start looking if performance is suffering.
* worst index count - The KUID and total index count of the single asset which is consuming the largest number of hardware indices. This does not necessarily indicate a poor performer - it may be that the asset is simply used far more heavily than other assets in the current scene. This is, however, a great place to start looking if performance is suffering.

Performance Fixing for End-Users
End Users can do little to resolve the types of performance issue discussed here. Running in "Native Mode" instead of using "Compatibility Mode" can provide a very significant performance boost at the expense of some visual compatibility with older content. Keeping up-to-date with the latest Trainz and content updates can also help make sure that you have the latest performance optimisations.

Performance Fixing for Route Builders
There are hard caps to the 'total buffers', 'vertices' and 'indices' figures above to prevent the system from exhausting all resource space which leads to a game crash. These caps are typically quite generous, however it is possible for specific assets to be constructed in such a way that they rapidly exhaust available resources.

When the usage starts to approach the hard caps, Trainz will attempt to reduce the draw distance in an effort to prevent hitting a hard cap. Hitting the hard cap is considered bad because any further items will not be rendered - this can include large items near the viewer. It is better to reduce the draw distance such that nearby items can be seen and distant items will be culled.

If overall performance is poor, or the if the draw distance is being visibly reduced, the route builder should pay close attention to the 'worst buffer count' and 'worst index count' statistics. In the majority of cases, one of these statistics will directly indicate the cause of the problem. It is worth noting that several assets can contribute to poor performance in a given scene - after identifying and removing the worst performer, the next-worst performer will be revealed. Route builders should remove or reduce the usage of the worst performers from the route, or substitute them for alternative better-performing assets.

Note that the performance statistics relate to the objects currently in view. Moving to another location on the route, changing the viewing angle, or adjusting the draw distance may affect the results provided by this tool.

Performance Fixing for Asset Builders
When creating content, the Surveyor performance statistics display can be useful for testing the efficiency of your model.

Test Methodology
Simply load up a blank baseboard, place a large number of copies of one item of your content scattered around the baseboard, and watch the performance numbers. The Surveyor "Replace Assets" command can be useful to perform like-for-like comparisons of your content against similar existing items.

When testing performance, you should generally not place a large number of objects at a single location, as this is an unrealistic test and skews the results. Distribute your objects around the scene.

It is best to test your object in relatively large numbers, with no other changes to the blank baseboard - no terrain editing; no terrain painting; no other scenery or splines.

A blank baseboard has some performance costs for terrain rendering. Be sure to note those numbers as a baseline before you start adding your own test objects.

Test Results
If your test object does not show up in the statistics, it is not being handled by the mesh stitching system. For high-detail or animated object, this is expected behavior. For medium-to-low detail static objects, this suggests a performance problem that should be resolved. It is worth noting that the low LOD of an object may be stitched while the higher-detailed LODs are not stitched. This will be accurately reflected in the statistics.

The material count for your object (whether singularly, or in large quantities) should be low, preferably 1-2 total. If the material count is overly large, consider revising your material setup in your modeling tool.

For efficient low-polygon objects, all numbers should stay relatively low even when large amounts of the content are placed on the baseboard.

For efficient high-polygon objects with LOD, you should see a relatively low material and buffer count, and higher vertex and index counts. As you approach your content, the vertex and index counts will rise rapidly - moving away from your content, the vertex and index counts should drop substantially. A single object at highest LOD may have the same impact on the numbers as hundreds or thousands of objects at the lowest LOD.

It is worth noting that the hardware vertex count may be significantly higher than what you might expect from looking at the vertex count inside of your modeling tool. This is due to the modeling tools representing any single point in 3D space as a single vertex, whereas the hardware may need to separate different smoothing groups and materials into separate vertices.

In all cases, the number of hardware buffers should stay low - roughly one buffer per ten thousand vertices. It is best to measure this after you have placed a medium-to-large number of your test object onto the route. If you are seeing significantly higher buffer numbers than this, your object is likely to cause performance problems when used in quantity.
